Growing up in Fairbanks Alaska in Aurora Ive always had a love and passion for dogs and all animals. My first " all my own dog" was a miniature dachshund when I was 8 years old named Gretchen. My dad decided that he really liked that breed and found a litter in Ester and paid $35 for her. That sealed the deal in a life long love of animals!
Holy Dog started in 2003 as a Horse and Dog business with partners. As the dog/pet boarding portion grew, Holy Dog became all mine in 2008. We added onto the building in 2009 and the rest is history!
People often ask where the name came from. My then partners and I were bouncing names around I i mentioned a book I had been reading. It was about a native american medicine man and his recollections. He spoke of the first time his people saw a horse when first brought to the continent. He said there was no word in his language for the animal that proved to be more efficient than using dogs for the lifestyle that they lived following the herds. So they called it a "Holy Dog" or a "Big Dog" This is referenced in the movie Hildalgo.
I feel the word is applicable to how we, as a society, feel about our family members with 4 legs and fur. The name stuck!
My journey with Holy Dog has provided me with the opportunity to meet so many fantastic people and Ive been able to further my passion with education. Ive attended and studied at so many conferences about dogs, their care, training and behavior over the years. WVC, Clicker Expo, APDT, IAABC, several smaller clinics and some specific to pet boarding. Learning how to understand and care for pets has become another obsession for me!
I look forward to developing relationships with you and your pet. There is always something to learn from the relationships that we make!
Im thankful for all the opportunity Ive had, I love the moments Im in and look forward to the future!
